The State Department is preparing a pilot program that would allow certain B-1/B-2 visitor visa applicants to pay an additional $750 fee for an expedited interview appointment at select U.S. embassies and consulates. The AP reports the program will run from July 1 through December 31, with participating posts to be announced before launch. The expedited interview would occur within 10 business days of payment, and would be in addition to the standard $185 visa application fee.
This change may help travelers facing long backlogs, including business visitors, tourists, and family visitors, but the service is not guaranteed to result in a visa—eligibility, security checks, and interview outcomes remain determinants. Visa waiver program countries may not benefit from this option. Applicants should prepare meticulously to demonstrate travel purpose, ties to home country, funds, and prior immigration history.
Businesses and families may find some value in faster interviews but should consult counsel if they have prior refusals or negative records, as expedited scheduling does not waive requirements.
